Mr. Hammel was Vice President & General Manager at WRAL-TV in November, 2008, and at Fox 50 in December, 2014. He retired from Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. in July 2018. Steve came out of retirement to assist UNC-TV as Interim Executive Director and General Manager from October 2018 until the end of January 2019.

Mr. Hammel came to Raleigh from Phoenix, Arizona where he held the same position at the CBS affiliate. Prior to Phoenix, Steve oversaw News Departments in Washington, DC; St. Louis; Rochester, NY; Dallas; Syracuse; and Harrisburg, PA. He also was a television and radio news reporter, as well as a newscast producer. He has served on multiple and diverse Boards and has found his greatest joy is in motivating leaders and ensuring that a good work culture and good morale leads to increased quality, creativity, and improved ratings.

He was was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He and his wife, Renee, have two golden retrievers.
